Circuit board transformer magnetic saturation

What is magnetic saturation of a transformer?

When the external magnetic field keeps getting stronger but the magnetic flux in the transformer doesn’t really change, it means that the transformer has reached a point of magnetic saturation.

When this happens, any changes in the magnetic field intensity won’t have much effect on the magnetic induction intensity. This leads to a significant reduction in magnetic permeability and most of the energy being turned into heat, which causes the temperature of the transformer to shoot up.

This whole situation can seriously affect the lifespan of the transformer and might even cause immediate damage, leading to unstable output voltage. In a state of magnetic saturation, you’ll find that an increase in primary voltage won’t result in a proportional increase in secondary voltage. If you keep increasing that primary voltage, it could end up overheating or even exploding.

On top of all that, because of this saturation issue with the transformer, your product’s actual power won’t be able to reach its designed power level. When there’s more load on it, you’ll see a rapid drop in output voltage and not be able to hit that design output power.

How to deal with magnetic saturation?

First of all, the simplest way is to increase the size of the air gap. Adding an appropriate air gap in the magnetic core can reduce the risk of magnetic saturation. The air gap can hinder the accumulation of magnetic flux, thereby avoiding over-saturation of the magnetic core. You can also adjust the number of coil turns. Avoid magnetic saturation.

Properly adjusting the number of coil turns to avoid excessive load on the transformer can reduce the risk of magnetic saturation. At the same time, if multiple transformers are connected in parallel, it is necessary to ensure load balance among the transformers to avoid local overloading.

In addition, replacing the main body can also prevent magnetic saturation to a certain extent.

Choosing magnetic core materials with high magnetic permeability and high saturation magnetic flux density can increase the saturation magnetic flux density of the magnetic core, thereby reducing the risk of magnetic saturation.
